About
A lecture and hands-on workshop introducing Ise City's culture, where participants make a Zai ceremonial baton used in Ise Jingu's Okihiki ceremony.
The Japan Foundation brings Ise City to Cambridge for an evening exploring the spiritual city and its traditions. After an introduction to Ise Jingu and its Shikinen Sengu periodic shrine rebuilding — held every 20 years, with the next rebuild due in 2033 — participants make their own Zai, a ceremonial baton used in the Okihiki timber-carrying ceremony, under close instruction from craftsman KAWANISHI Masahiko of Miyachu ltd. Places are described as extremely limited and registration is required.
