Pontefract Civic Society Monthly Talk – Setting up the Commonwealth War Graves Commission

David Jones tells the story of the Imperial War Graves Commission and its development into the Commonwealth War Graves Commission, including the challenge of commemorating those killed in the First World War.

The talk describes how the First World War created a new need to honour the dead across the battlefields, and how the commission developed in response to families’ calls to respect the lives and sacrifices of those killed.
