‘Think if the Man that is not Nigh’ – The Narrative of Engraved Coins, 1752 – 1868
About
A talk by folklorist Alessandra Curtis on engraved coin keepsakes of love and separation made between 1752 and 1868, held at Abney Park.
Part of the Gates of the Abode season's Tales of Departure series, this lecture explores engraved coin keepsakes such as Sailors' Farewell Coins, Prisoner Coins and Leaden Hearts, made between 1752 and 1868. The talk draws on Tim Millett's collection and connects the tokens to figures buried at Abney Park, including Chartist orator Henry Vincent and transported burglar Archibald Sloss. Speaker Alessandra Curtis is a British-Italian folklorist with a background in archaeology and a focus on London's material culture. The event takes place in the Harriet Delph room, with level access from the High Street entrance.
