‘Losing an Empire, Winning Friends’? Sandhurst, Military Assistance, and British Decolonization
About
A history seminar in which Sarah Stockwell examines Commonwealth and foreign cadets at post-war Sandhurst and what they reveal about Britain's experience of decolonization.
Sarah Stockwell, Professor of Imperial and Commonwealth History at King's College London, delivers this seminar on British military assistance to emergent Commonwealth states in the 1950s and 1960s. The talk explores the influx of students from former colonies to train in Britain, including at the Royal Military Academy Sandhurst, where demand for places strained British authorities. It asks what the history of Commonwealth and foreign cadets at post-war Sandhurst reveals about Britain's management and experience of decolonization. The event forms part of the German Historical Institute London's research seminar series.
