Karayuki-san: The Making of a Prostitute

A documentary follows Zendo Kikuyo, a Japanese woman trafficked to Malaysia as a teenager, as she recounts her life there to filmmaker Shōhei Imamura.

Imamura traces Kikuyo’s memories of leaving her hometown for Malaysia at 19, working in a former brothel and building a life overseas. Her story connects to the wider history of Japanese women sent across Asia into sex work. The page identifies this presentation as a 16mm screening with Japanese and Malay dialogue and English subtitles.
