Victoria Tunnel | 2 Hour Tour
About
A two-hour guided tour of Newcastle's Victoria Tunnel exploring its Victorian waggonway origins and Second World War air raid shelter history.
This extended two-hour guided tour takes visitors into the Victoria Tunnel, a preserved 19th-century waggonway beneath Newcastle. The tour begins with a health and safety briefing at 51 Lime Street before the group walks to the tunnel entrance. Inside, guides cover the tunnel's construction and its role as a Second World War air raid shelter, with sound effects recreating air-raid warnings and passing planes, and the route passes beneath Hadrian's Roman Wall. The tunnel stays around 12°C year round with uneven, damp flooring in places, so warm jackets and flat shoes are recommended; children must be over 7 and accompanied by an adult. Booking includes an annual pass allowing free return visits to any tour within 12 months.
