Victoria Tunnel | 1¼ Hour Tour
About
A guided 1¼ hour tour of Newcastle's Victoria Tunnel covering its history as a Victorian coal waggonway and Second World War air raid shelter.
This 1¼ hour guided tour introduces the story of the Victoria Tunnel, beginning with a health and safety briefing at 51 Lime Street before the group walks to the tunnel entrance. Inside, visitors hear about the tunnel's role as an air raid shelter during World War Two, including sound effects of air-raid warnings and passing planes, and learn about its original construction as a Victorian waggonway carrying coal to the Tyne. The tour finishes back near the entrance and includes walking beneath Newcastle landmarks such as Hadrian's Roman Wall. Children over 7 are welcome when accompanied by an adult, and visitors are advised to wear flat shoes and a light jacket as the tunnel is around 12 degrees year round.
