Wales is… Aberfan
About
A free display at St Fagans marking 60 years since the Aberfan disaster, featuring a clock stopped at 9.13am and other objects entrusted to the museum by a connected family.
This display in the Wales is... gallery marks 60 years since the Aberfan disaster of 21 October 1966. It centres on a small clock, stopped at 9.13am — the moment the disaster struck — which was entrusted to Amgueddfa Cymru in 2022 by a family connected to the events. It is shown alongside other objects from the same family, including schoolbooks and a football belonging to siblings Marylyn and Carl Minett, who both died that day. Together the objects offer a personal insight into loss, grief and remembrance, and provide a space to reflect on Aberfan's enduring place in Wales' collective memory.
