Christmas Eve: Havant Light Opera
About
Havant Light Opera performs Stephen Hoy's comic Christmas operetta, adapted from Gogol, about a blacksmith who must outwit the Devil to save Christmas.
This Christmas operetta by Stephen Hoy is freely adapted from Gogol's short story and follows Vakula, a young blacksmith who must outwit the Devil, travel to the Empress's palace and win back the love of Maria before dawn on Christmas Day. The show mixes humour, romance, witches, devils and stolen moons with beloved Christmas music, drawing on melodies by Sullivan, German, Tchaikovsky, Lehar, Mozart, Humperdinck and Offenbach. Performances run over three evenings with a Saturday matinee, and the running time is 145 minutes including an interval.
