Exhibition: Theodor von Holst: From Frankenstein to the Pre-Raphaelites
About
An exhibition of rarely seen works by Romantic artist Theodor von Holst, Gustav Holst's great-uncle, at Holst Victorian House.
The exhibition presents rarely seen works by Theodor von Holst (1810-1844), Gustav Holst's great-uncle and the first illustrator of Mary Shelley's Frankenstein, whose paintings helped pave the way for the Pre-Raphaelites. Works from private collections are shown alongside the museum's permanent collection, including a recently discovered self-portrait and the dramatic Spanish Lady, displayed within the museum's Victorian interiors. A fully illustrated catalogue by von Holst scholar Max Browne is available as part of the exhibition, and a programme of related events such as Museum by Candlelight evenings, talks and workshops is planned.
