Everard Read London presents A Certain Slant of Light, an exhibition of new paintings by South African artist Caryn Scrimgeour. Her meticulously rendered still lifes juxtapose fragile keepsakes with everyday objects — embroidered tablecloths, porcelain, butterflies, petals and unopened gifts — evoking Dutch Golden Age vanitas painting alongside the quieter traditions of Classical Chinese and Japanese poetry. Themes of transience, memory and preservation run through the works, in which the only human presence is the artist's ghostly reflection in silverware.
