About

A Mile End Institute panel revisits the 1976 IMF crisis and later financial shocks, asking how market pressures shape British politics and democratic choices.

The discussion connects the 1976 IMF loan with the Asian financial crisis, the 2007–08 financial crisis and the 2022 mini-budget. Panellists Kathleen Burk, Will Davies, Stephanie Flanders and Colm Murphy consider how markets constrain governments, what happens when investors lose confidence, and what this means for democratic decision-making. QMUL has not yet announced the campus building or room.
