About
Welsh National Opera pairs Bartók’s Bluebeard’s Castle and Stravinsky’s Oedipus Rex in a single staging about secrets, power and fate.
Judith enters Duke Bluebeard’s castle, demanding that its locked doors be opened. The stark setting then becomes plague-stricken Thebes, where Oedipus’s search for the truth uncovers a destiny he cannot escape. Joe Hill-Gibbins directs and Lydia Yankovskaya conducts, with Nathan Berg, Peter Hoare, and Christine Rice in the cast. The double bill also features music by Hildegard von Bingen and utilizes English National Opera’s original production of Bluebeard’s Castle.
