Book Launch: Captured Consent. A conversation with Sonia Tycko
About
A book launch talk in which historian Sonia Tycko discusses her study of consent in seventeenth-century contract labour, in person and online.
Sonia Tycko (University of Edinburgh) speaks about her book Captured Consent: Contract Labor in English Charity, Colonization, and War, 1600–1700 (Cambridge University Press, 2026). The talk examines how contractual consent was understood in early modern England and its American colonies, where pauper apprentices, indentured servants, conscripts and prisoners of war were deemed to have freely consented to coercive labour. It is a hybrid event co-hosted with the Centre for Commercial Law Studies and the Centre for Renaissance and Early Modern Studies under the London Forum for Premodern Studies, with online participation via MS Teams after registration.
