Profound Desires of the Gods

A Tokyo engineer arrives on a remote island, where the Futori family and local customs draw him into a clash between tradition and modernisation.

Shōhei Imamura’s 1968 film follows engineer Kariya as he oversees a sugar factory on Kurage and becomes entangled with the outcast Futori family. The ICA describes the island’s superstitions and privation alongside the pressures of industrial change. ICA’s standard cinema policy is 18+ unless otherwise stated.
