The Breaking of the English Working Class, with Jonas Patrick Marvin
About
Author Jonas Patrick Marvin gives a talk at Five Leaves Bookshop on the fragmentation of working-class identity in Britain over the past forty years.
Writer and campaigner Jonas Patrick Marvin retells the story of the English working class since the Thatcher era, arguing that power and capital have shattered a radical collective identity into competing fragments such as white, male, northerner, homeowner and unemployed. Blending political analysis with his own experiences of class in London and the rustbelt Midlands, he shows how working-class people have been demonised and managed into impotence. The talk concludes with the case that the working class embodies a collective will for change that can be rekindled. Refreshments are included.
