Tower Tours
About
Guided climb up 211 steps to the top of Britain's oldest cathedral tower for views over St Albans, lasting about an hour.
Tower Tours take visitors up 211 winding steps of the Norman tower, the only great crossing tower from the 1000s still standing in the country. Along the way participants touch the Roman bricks in its construction, see the painted ceiling and medieval coats of arms up close from the Lantern, and walk a Victorian gantry above the medieval Presbytery and Shrine Chapel ceiling. The hour-long tour also visits the Bell Ringing Chamber and Belfry with the Cathedral's 13 new and eight old bells, and ends with views over St Albans — and, weather permitting, towards London — from the tower roof. Children must be 11 or over and accompanied by an adult, and the steep climb means it is not suitable for those with vertigo or claustrophobia.
