Reclaiming Creative Materials with Significant Seams
About
A hands-on volunteering 'sew-cial' with Significant Seams, sorting and reclaiming undervalued creative materials into craft kits.
Significant Seams, an art for mental health and wellbeing organisation, hosts an in-person volunteering session reclaiming creative materials that others might overlook. Participants help process undervalued supplies — rotary cutting fabric, ironing, sorting industry waste wool and packaging materials, and occasionally trialling craft kits — which are assembled into packs that raise funds for equal participation by people in vulnerable life moments. The session doubles as a social gathering, with conversation prompts about what is worth the effort and what skills we can share. Organisers say this is the start of a monthly, and possibly weekly, group, with activities varying from session to session.
