English Touring Opera presents an Autumn double-bill pairing two stories of love and loss. The first half is Elena Langer's Ariadne, a 20-minute one-act drama for soprano setting Glyn Maxwell's poem Ariadne to Theseus, in which the abandoned Cretan princess addresses the lover who deserted her. This is followed by Purcell's Dido & Aeneas, one of the first and best-loved English operas, distilling the tragedy of Dido and the Trojan hero into an hour of drama and desolation. The performance is sung in English with English surtitles.
