Ashmolean NOW: Soma Surovi Jannat
About
A free Ashmolean exhibition of new paintings and drawings by Bangladeshi artist Soma Surovi Jannat, inspired by the Sundarbans and the museum's collections.
The fifth in the Ashmolean NOW series, this exhibition presents new work by Bangladeshi artist Soma Surovi Jannat, the first Bangladeshi artist-in-residence at the Ashmolean and the first Bangladesh-based artist to have a solo museum show in the UK. Her paintings and drawings draw on the Sundarbans mangrove forest and the Ashmolean's historical collections to address the climate crisis and the links between natural disasters and social inequality. Around 40 objects are on display, including works on paper, a 30-foot-long scroll and an ephemeral wall drawing completed in the gallery.
