1984
About
A stage adaptation of George Orwell's dystopian novel 1984, following Winston Smith's rebellion against the Party in a world of surveillance and control.
This two-hour stage adaptation (including an interval) brings Orwell's 1949 novel to the Studio at Derby Theatre, adapted by Robert Owens, Wilton E Hall Jr and Willima A Miles Jr. It follows Winston Smith, an ordinary man living under the Party's constant gaze, whose desire for truth and individuality leads him towards rebellion alongside Julia. The production explores surveillance, manipulated truth and the cost of resistance, with themes the theatre frames as strikingly relevant to today's information age. Advisories note scenes of violence and torture, oppressive themes, loud noises and flashing lights; the show is recommended for ages 14 and over.
