Macclesfield Buttons Workshop

A two-hour adult workshop at the Silk Museum making traditional Macclesfield thread buttons, led by Catherine Bailey and Ann Gibson.

Participants make their own interpretations of traditional thread buttons in a hands-on session exploring Macclesfield's button-making heritage, from sixteenth-century oxhair buttons through the seventeenth-century cottage industry to later silk trimmings. Button moulds and workshop-specific materials are provided; attendees bring basic sewing equipment, an embroidery frame if preferred, and a small selection of silk or cotton threads. The two-hour session is for adults aged 18 and over.
