The Accrington Pals
About
The Green Room Theatre stages Peter Whelan's World War I drama The Accrington Pals over six performances in November 2026.
Peter Whelan's 1981 play recounts the story of the 11th (Service) Battalion of the East Lancashire Regiment, focusing on the roughly 700 local volunteers from Accrington who enlisted during World War I. The drama contrasts the harsh realities of the Western Front with the lives of the women left at home, centring on greengrocer May and her young cousin and lodger Tom, who enlists as a 'Pal' alongside his best friend Ralph. The production is directed by Rosalind Brown and produced by Simon Coppen-Gardner, with evening performances at 7.30pm and a Saturday matinee at 11am.
