Meet the Author: Barbara Farquharson 'The Burnt House at Weston: Winners & Losers in an 18th C Devon Landscape'
About
Author Barbara Farquharson talks about her book on the 1770s Weston house destroyed by arson in 1829 and its unpopular landowner, John Stuckey.
Barbara Farquharson, a founder member of the Branscombe Project, presents her book 'The Burnt House at Weston', completed this year after the death of her co-writer John Torrance in 2021. It tells the story of a grand 1770s house at Weston, built by the wealthy but unpopular entrepreneur John Stuckey and destroyed by fire in 1829, almost certainly by arson. The talk also touches on the 1801 Branscombe food riot, a rare instance of an East Devon village community taking to the streets. Doors open at 2:00pm with last admission at 2:20pm, and tea and biscuits are included; booking is required as numbers are limited.
