About

Karen Serres examines how Samuel Courtauld built a major collection of French Impressionist art and helped place works in both private and national collections in Britain.

The presentation follows Courtauld’s collecting in the 1920s, including gifts and purchases for national collections, and his belief in art’s capacity to improve society. The published synopsis highlights Van Gogh’s Sunflowers and Seurat’s Bathers at Asnières as examples of the works whose British visibility his patronage helped shape. The talk is part of the Cercle Français de Chiswick’s French-language conference programme.
