About
Local historian Dr Tony Rea gives a talk on the Devonshire Regiment's battalions and their major engagements during the First World War.
The Plymouth Historical Association hosts local historian Dr Tony Rea for a presentation on the Devonshire Regiment in the First World War. The talk traces the regiment's growth from seven battalions in August 1914 to sixteen by 1917, with soldiers serving on the Western Front and in Italy, Salonika, Mesopotamia and the Holy Land. It covers major engagements including the retreat from Mons in 1914, Loos in 1915, the Somme in 1916 and the German offensive of 1918, alongside honours such as the French Croix de Guerre awarded to the 2nd battalion and Victoria Crosses to two soldiers. The event lasts 90 minutes and takes place in person at the Levinsky Theatre.
