Duncan Shanks: The Unseen Journey
About
An intimate exhibition of sketchbooks, studies and paintings revealing Duncan Shanks' creative process, inspired by the Clyde Valley.
This exhibition explores a decade of sketchbooks, exploratory studies and finished works by landscape artist Duncan Shanks, drawn from his gift of 106 sketchbooks to The Hunterian. It features 26 works tracing the journey from first mark-making to finished composition, with quotations and annotations revealing the artist's daily drawing habit and influences from poets, composers and fellow artists. Shown in two instalments due to light sensitivity: the first (30 October 2026–31 January 2027) centres on the painting Autumn Mist, and the second (2 February–2 May 2027) focuses on his cherry tree motifs and studies of the rising winter sun.
