About

Émilie Capulet traces the role of music in Jules Verne’s adventure and science-fiction writing, including the imagined instruments of his characters, and considers how sound connects people, nature and technology.

Music in Jules Verne’s writing serves as more than atmosphere: it shapes the adventures of characters such as Captain Nemo and his piano-organ, and frames the relationship between human invention, nature and the wider world. The talk is part of the Cercle Français de Chiswick’s French-language conference programme.
