2026 Annual James McCune Smith Lecture: Dr Leighan Renaud

Dr Leighan Renaud delivers the 2026 Annual James McCune Smith Lecture on matrifocality and the Caribbean family, followed by a drinks reception.

Dr Leighan Renaud (University of Bristol) gives the annual James McCune Smith Lecture, 'Beyond the Nuclear: Matrifocality and the Caribbean Family'. She examines representations of matrifocal and non-nuclear families in Caribbean literature, considering whether they are a problem or an opportunity to broaden definitions of family, mothering, fathering and community, in light of CARICOM's 2026 amendment to its Ten Point Plan for Reparations. The lecture is followed by a post-talk drinks reception.
