Classicism in a Cold Climate: The Career of Emanuel Vincent Harris (1876-1971)

Julian Holder surveys the contentious career of classical architect Emanuel Vincent Harris, from his early London County Council work to civic commissions and postwar design.

This lecture traces Harris’s career from his early work in the London County Council Highways Department through major civic projects and his later Festival of Britain-era work. It considers how his commitment to classical architecture shaped his reception as modernist taste changed. The event is hybrid, with an in-person session in IHR room N203 at Senate House and an online option.
