Collection Spotlight case: Remembering Peterloo
About
A free display of objects made in the aftermath of the 1819 Peterloo Massacre, including a commemorative jug newly acquired by the museum.
This Collection Spotlight case marks the Peterloo Massacre of 16 August 1819, when a yeomanry charge into a peaceful reform gathering at St Peter's Field in Manchester killed 18 people. The display brings together objects created in the aftermath of the massacre, showing how people continued to remember Peterloo despite government restrictions on public discussion. Its centrepiece is a Peterloo commemorative jug, recently acquired with Art Fund support and going on public display for the first time. The display is suitable for all ages.
