Christmas Crime Festival: Bigamy in Bradford, An Historical Talk by Tee Bylo
About
Historian and storyteller Tee Bylo brings the true 1867 bigamy case of Martha Ann Critchley to life in Bradford Police Museum's historic courtroom.
Part of the Bradford Christmas Crime Festival 2026, this talk by genealogist and storyteller Tee Bylo, also known as The Dead Sleuth, retells the true story of Martha Ann Critchley, a Bradford woman accused of bigamy in January 1867. Drawing on original court transcripts held by the museum, the proceedings are brought to life with the help of volunteer performers in the museum's historic courtroom at Bradford City Hall. The two-hour event explores Victorian relationships, scandal and the workings of the criminal justice system, with an unexpected twist as the case unfolds.
