BBC Philharmonic - Age of Anxiety

The BBC Philharmonic under Roderick Cox performs Higdon, Bernstein's Age of Anxiety with pianist Hayato Sumino, and Prokofiev's Fifth Symphony.

The BBC Philharmonic Orchestra, conducted by Roderick Cox, opens with Jennifer Higdon's percussive Fanfare Ritmico. Pianist Hayato Sumino then joins for Leonard Bernstein's Symphony No. 2, 'The Age of Anxiety', a work inspired by W.H. Auden's poem in which four strangers meet at a bar. The concert concludes with Prokofiev's Symphony No. 5, premiered in January 1945 and marked by warmth and hope rather than wartime suffering.
