Saved for the Nation
About
A display celebrating the transfer of two Sir Joshua Reynolds masterpieces to the National Trust collection at Waddesdon Manor.
This exhibition marks the transfer of two of Sir Joshua Reynolds' greatest paintings to the National Trust for display at Waddesdon Manor: Joanna Leigh, Mrs Richard Bennett Lloyd, Inscribing a Tree (1775-76) and David Garrick between Tragedy and Comedy (1760-1). Both works had been on loan at the Manor for over 30 years and are now part of the national collection through the Acceptance in Lieu scheme. The display also explains how this UK government mechanism, established in 1910, allows important cultural objects to enter public ownership in place of inheritance tax.
