RTWSO: Romance & Revolution
About
The RTWSO orchestra performs Rimsky-Korsakov, Rachmaninoff and Shostakovich with pianist Freddy Kempf and conductor Peter Selwyn.
This RTWSO concert pairs festival colour with symphonic intensity. Rimsky-Korsakov's Easter Festival Overture opens the programme, followed by Freddy Kempf as piano soloist in Rachmaninoff's Rhapsody on a Theme of Paganini, building to its famous 18th variation. After the interval, Peter Selwyn conducts Shostakovich's Symphony No. 10, premiered directly after the death of Stalin and full of tragedy, marches, waltzes and the composer's DSCH musical signature. The running time is 50 minutes, a 20-minute interval and a further 50 minutes.
