RSGS: John E A Bartholomew: Mapping the Pentland Hills
About
John E A Bartholomew gives a Royal Scottish Geographical Society talk on how mapmakers have depicted the Pentland Hills over nearly four centuries.
Drawing on his book Mapping the Pentland Hills, John E A Bartholomew — descended from Edinburgh's distinguished mapmaking family — traces how generations of cartographers captured the Pentland Hills, from the earliest surviving maps to modern interpretations. The talk explores how changing depictions reveal shifting attitudes to geography, settlement, land use and natural resources over nearly four centuries. This highly visual talk is hosted by the RSGS at Easterbrook Hall, with tickets also available on the door.
