Catherine Opie: To Be Seen
About
The first major UK museum exhibition of American photographer Catherine Opie's portraits, at the Royal Scottish Academy.
Curated in collaboration with the artist and touring from the National Portrait Gallery in London, this is the first major museum exhibition of Catherine Opie's work in the UK and her first solo exhibition in Scotland. Nearly 80 portraits spanning 30 years are shown alongside portraits from Scotland's national collection, exploring themes of home, intimacy, family, politics, identity and power structures. The exhibition ranges from her early work Being and Having (1991) and portraits of LGBTQ+ friends inspired by Hans Holbein to Baroque-like portraits of artists, questioning who is portrayed in art and who goes unseen.
