Building a sustainable future from an industrial past
About
Kitakyushu Mayor Takeuchi Kazuhisa gives a free talk on how the Japanese industrial city transformed itself into a global leader in environmental sustainability.
To coincide with the opening of the Tradition/Rebellion exhibition, Mayor Takeuchi Kazuhisa of Kitakyushu City discusses the city's journey from a leading steel-producing industrial centre to an internationally recognised sustainable city. He traces the severe industrial pollution of the 1960s, the collaborative response by residents and businesses, and current initiatives including offshore wind power, hydrogen energy and the circular economy. The talk also highlights the role of Kitakyushu's citizens in shaping the city's vision and its impact beyond Japan.
