Raisa Kabir
About
A free solo exhibition by artist and weaver Raisa Kabir exploring Scotland and South Asia's intertwined textile legacies through sculpture, weaving and film.
Raisa Kabir's newly commissioned solo exhibition at Tramway presents an ambitious, site-specific installation titled House of Stolen Weavers. Large 'loom-house-boat' sculptures combine hand loom anatomy with silhouettes of colonial sugar ships and Bangladeshi boats, suspended alongside large-scale hand-woven and digitally woven tapestries referencing South Asian delta and flood maps. Found coracles filled with cotton, silk, indigo, cochineal, jute and flax appear in the space and in a projected film of a performance by the artist. The exhibition examines colonial textile histories, including the Paisley pattern's origins in Kashmir and Glasgow's legacy as a merchant city, while celebrating craft traditions of the Bengal delta.
