About

A free display in GoMA's balcony galleries telling the history of the building, from its 1778 origins to Glasgow's rise as a centre of art and culture.

This display in the Gallery of Modern Art's balcony galleries tells the story of the building itself. It traces its beginnings as a mansion built in 1778 with wealth from industries reliant on enslavement, through eras of international trade and innovations including the city's first telephone exchange, to Glasgow's emergence as a centre for art and culture. It is free and drop-in, suitable for all ages, and open during the venue's normal opening times.
