About

A family activity session making traditional besom brooms from silver birch twigs while helping manage Ashdown Forest's heathland habitat.

Part of the Wild Wednesdays family activity days run by the Ashdown Forest Education team, this session focuses on making a traditional besom broom out of silver birch twigs. Children help manage the Forest's heathland habitat and can use their broom to sweep up leaves at home. The session runs from 10am to 12pm and is suitable for children aged 5–12 accompanied by an adult; participants should wear long sleeves, long trousers and sturdy shoes.
