Geology at Cullercoats
About
A guided field trip with NHSN's Earth Sciences Group exploring the geology of Cullercoats Bay, including its Permian-age strata exposure.
NHSN's Earth Sciences Group leads a five-hour field session exploring the geology of Cullercoats Bay, home to the most northerly exposure of Permian-age strata on the Northumberland coast. Participants will see Yellow Sands and Raisby Formation Magnesian Limestone, whose presence is linked to the Finety-Fathom Fault, with coal measures sequences to the south and Carboniferous channel sandstones at Browns Bay. The walk covers sandy beach, rocky foreshore and coastal path, and attendees should bring sturdy footwear, outdoor clothing and lunch.
