About
Stories of the herring girls who followed fishing fleets across Britain between 1850 and 1950, tracing their hard work and the communities they built in fishing towns.
The exhibition draws on local artefacts and archives, including a McConnachies kipper box, an agreement signed by local herring girls and Stornoway rules for seasonal workers’ accommodation. It is part of a joint project run by HighLife Highland with Suffolk Archives, Norfolk Record Office and Tasglann nan Eilean to capture stories from across the country.
