Fungi forage and identification
About
A hands-on day of fungi foraging and identification in Ashdown Forest, covering safe identification, sustainable harvesting, edible species and creative uses.
Led by forager Fergus Drennan, this practical course explores the fungal flora of Ashdown Forest's woodland and grassland habitats. Participants learn systematic identification using keys and field guides, with attention to poisonous species and dangerous lookalikes, alongside sustainable harvesting. The day also covers edible and medicinal fungi, with tastings of preserved and prepared mushroom products, plus non-food uses such as natural dyeing, inks and paper making. Equipment including gloves, baskets, keys and hand lenses is provided; the course runs from 9.30am to around 3pm.
