Young Soul Rebels + Q&A
About
A screening of Isaac Julien's landmark 1977-set Black British film Young Soul Rebels, followed by a live onstage Q&A with actor Mo Sesay hosted by Enva Lewis.
Isaac Julien's debut feature follows pirate DJs Chris and Caz in London in the days before the Queen's Silver Jubilee, as their world is shattered when a close friend is killed while cruising in a local park. A landmark of Black and queer British cinema, the film blends coming-of-age, romance and thriller elements to portray late 70s London as a place where community, youth culture and identity politics collide. The screening is part of Enva Lewis's season for the BFI's nationwide Rip It Up programme and will be followed by a live onstage Q&A with actor Mo Sesay, hosted by Lewis.
