Early Modern Sensory Exchanges
About
Dr Leah R. Clark gives a free public lecture on sensory exchanges and transcultural objects in the early modern world, in partnership with the Levantine Heritage Foundation.
This lecture, held in partnership with the Levantine Heritage Foundation, explores how the trade in objects, people and materials created sensory exchanges in the early modern world. Dr Leah R. Clark traces the lifecycle of items such as Chinese porcelain gifted to Italian courts and aromatics sought by European elites, following their journeys by camel and ship, their roles as diplomatic gifts and trade goods, and their uses in new settings. The talk asks how these materials and objects gave rise to cross-cultural exchanges and transcultural practices connecting places from Germany to India and Peru to Turkey. It is free and open to all, with remote attendance available via registration.
