About

Architectural historian Dr George Michell gives an illustrated talk on the ruins of Vijayanagara at Hampi, capital of a great South Indian kingdom.

Dr George Michell presents an illustrated talk on Vijayanagara Hampi, capital of the greatest Hindu kingdom of Southern India between the 14th and 16th centuries. He will give the historical background to the city and discuss its principal monuments and their vivid sculptural decoration. Michell spent over 20 years mapping Hampi with archaeologist John M. Fritz, and the pair have authored City of Victory (Mumbai 2026), illustrated by photographer John Gollings. The talk takes place at the Royal Asiatic Society's lecture theatre, with online attendance available via Zoom registration.
