About

An exhibition in the Pop-Up Gallery examines how historic medical advertising portrayed gender, beauty and race, alongside more progressive examples.

Thackray’s collection of medical advertising reveals how nineteenth-century remedies sold social ideals as well as products. The exhibition places the imagery and stereotypes found in historical adverts alongside more progressive examples, asking what narratives persist and what has changed. The published run is 20 June 2026 to 18 April 2027.
