Rainer Werner Fassbinder directs this 1978 drama about Elvira Weishaupt, who once lived as a burly working-class butcher before making an enormous sacrifice for love. Having undergone a sex change for a romantic interest who has since left her, she must now come to terms with the tension between her past life and her present identity. Volker Spengler leads the cast, with Ingrid Caven, Gottfried John and Elisabeth Trissenaar among the supporting players.
