1-Day Winter Skills Refresher: Ice Axe, Crampons & Snow Confidence
About
A one-day practical winter skills refresher in the Scottish Highlands for competent hillwalkers, covering ice axe work, crampon technique and snowpack assessment.
AFS Mountaineering runs this intensive one-day refresher for experienced hillwalkers who have previously completed a winter skills course or have basic winter movement experience. The day focuses on sharpening core winter movement skills: ice axe work including self-belay, step-cutting and ice axe arrest, crampon footwork such as flat-footing and front-pointing, snowpack and terrain assessment, and streamlining winter kit. Participants must be competent summer hillwalkers with good mountain fitness; the course is not for complete beginners. Instruction is provided by Fabian, a qualified Winter Mountain Leader, and the price covers instruction only, with winter boots and crampons strongly recommended or hireable locally.
